Beating the Heat: Ensuring Optimal Cooling for Data Centres in Australia and New Zealand

  • 16 August 2023

Australia and New Zealand are witnessing a surge in their data centre market, with Sydney ranking among the top 10 data centre markets globally and Auckland identified as one to watch. As digital services expand and organisations require increased data centre capacity, the rising temperatures pose a significant challenge. In this article, we will explore effective strategies to combat heat-related issues and safeguard the critical infrastructure of data centres.

The Impact of Soaring Temperatures

The increasing heat brings forth various challenges for data centres, as demonstrated by the disruptions experienced in London’s data centres during an exceptionally hot summer. Therefore, facility managers and data centre operators can implement the following measures to address these challenges.

Maximising Cooling Efficiency

During periods of high temperatures, it is important to optimise cooling units by reducing the load on each individual unit. By operating multiple cooling units simultaneously, the refrigerant pressures can be kept at lower levels, mitigating the risk of high-pressure shutdowns and enabling more efficient operations.

Prioritising Maintenance

Regular maintenance is paramount, especially during heatwaves, to ensure uninterrupted data centre operations. Quarterly maintenance routines should include a focus on the following areas:

Condenser Coil Care

Cleaning and inspecting condenser coils should be conducted more frequently, particularly during seasons characterised by pollen, dust, or cottonwood presence. Neglecting coil maintenance can significantly impact the coil’s heat-transfer capability, which becomes even more critical during high ambient temperatures. Failure to clean coils can lead to unexpected cooling loss when the system shuts down due to high refrigerant pressures.

Optimal Refrigerant Charge Levels

Regularly monitoring and maintaining the proper refrigerant charge levels is vital. Insufficient levels result in reduced capacity and compressor overheating, while excessive levels may lead to high-pressure conditions. Maintaining the appropriate charge levels ensures optimal performance and efficiency of data centre operations.

Considering Data Centre Infrastructure Design

In addition to cooling strategies and maintenance practices, data centre operators and facility managers must evaluate the design of their infrastructure to suit the prevailing environmental conditions. Adapting infrastructure design to meet specific location requirements enables data centres to better withstand temperature challenges and continue supporting the region’s digital growth.

At Data Clean, we recognise the pivotal role data centres play in Australia and New Zealand’s digital economies. As a leading provider of cleaning services for controlled environments, we are dedicated to assisting data centres in overcoming heat-related challenges.
