What is Degaussing? Its Advantages and Disadvantages

  • 31 July 2024

As data protection laws become more stringent, the need for secure data destruction has become paramount. Organizations must ensure that sensitive data is permanently erased to comply with regulations and protect against data breaches. Two primary methods for data destruction are degaussing and secure data erasure. This article explores the differences between these methods, their advantages, and disadvantages, and provides recommendations for organizations.

What Is Degaussing?

Degaussing is a data destruction technique that erases data from magnetic storage devices by eliminating their magnetic field. The degaussing process involves passing the magnetic media through a powerful alternating magnetic field to rearrange the magnetization of the magnetic particles, completely removing any resemblance of the previously recorded signal. Degaussers are designed to ensure that the generated magnetic field covers the entire magnetic media when the media is passed through it, either by manually holding the media and moving it through the field or automatically conveyed by a belt transporter. This procedure makes the data stored on the device irretrievable and ensures that sensitive information is permanently destroyed.

How Is Degaussing Performed?

Degaussing involves passing the magnetic storage device through a powerful magnetic field, which disrupts the stored data and renders it unreadable. The strength and type of magnetic field required depend on the storage device’s construction and the density of the data stored.

Types of Degaussers

There are three primary types of degaussers:

  1. Coil Degausser: This type uses an electromagnetic coil to generate a powerful magnetic field that degausses the storage media. It is effective for erasing data from tapes and hard drives but can be bulky and expensive.
  2. Capacitive Discharge Degausser: This type stores energy in a capacitor and releases it in a short, intense burst to create a strong magnetic field. It is faster and more portable than coil degaussers but may require more maintenance.
  3. Permanent Magnet Degausser: This type uses a permanent magnet to produce a constant magnetic field. It is simple, reliable, and does not require a power source, but it may not be as effective on modern, high-density storage media.

What Type of Storage Media Can Be Degaussed?

Degaussing can be used on various magnetic storage media, including:

  • Hard Disk Drives (HDDs)
  • Floppy Disks
  • Magnetic Tapes

However, it is essential to note that degaussing is ineffective on solid-state drives (SSDs) and optical media such as CDs and DVDs.

Disadvantages and Limitations of Degaussing

While degaussing is a reliable method for data destruction, it has several drawbacks:

  1. Low Efficacy of Data Destruction: Degaussing may not completely erase data on high-density or newer storage media, leaving residual data that can be recovered with advanced techniques.
  2. Limited Scope of Media Sanitization: Degaussing is only applicable to magnetic storage devices and does not work on SSDs, CDs, or DVDs. Alternative technologies like flash memory-based storage devices, or Solid State Drives (SSDs), have become common due to lower costs, higher performance, and shock resistance. SSDs are already changing the norms in storage technology, and from a sanitization perspective this change is revolutionary rather than evolutionary. Degaussing, a basic method for cleaning magnetic media, mostly no longer applies to flash memory-based devices.

Evolutionary changes in magnetic media will also impact sanitization. New storage technologies, and even variations of magnetic storage, which are significantly different from legacy magnetic media, will clearly require new sanitization research and a review of sanitization procedures to ensure effectiveness.

  1. No Scalability: Degaussing is a time-consuming process that is not easily scalable for large volumes of storage media.
  2. Renders the Media Unusable and Generates E-waste: Once degaussed, the storage media cannot be reused, contributing to electronic waste.
  3. High Operational Costs: Degaussers can be expensive to purchase and maintain, making them a costly option for data destruction.

Secure Data Erasure — An Alternative to Degaussing

Secure data erasure is an effective alternative to degaussing, offering several benefits:

  1. Wider Scope of Media Sanitization: Secure data erasure can be applied to various storage media, including SSDs and optical discs.
  2. Higher Degree of Effectiveness: Data erasure ensures that all data is completely removed, leaving no chance for recovery.
  3. High Scalability and Manageability: Data erasure solutions can handle large volumes of storage media efficiently and can be managed easily.
  4. Data Erasure Allows Media Reuse and Generates Zero E-waste: Unlike degaussing, data erasure does not damage the storage media, allowing it to be reused and reducing electronic waste.
  5. Ease of Deployment: Data erasure solutions are straightforward to implement and do not require specialized equipment.

Economical: Data erasure is cost-effective, reducing the need for expensive degaussers and minimizing electronic waste disposal costs.

Conclusion:

While degaussing is a viable method for data destruction, its limitations and high operational costs make it less desirable for many organizations. Secure data erasure offers a more effective, scalable, and economical solution, allowing companies to comply with data protection regulations while minimizing electronic waste and preserving the usability of storage media.
